Krone Meltzer’s Picks for UFC 87.

Lightweight Bout
Roger Huerta vs.
Kenny Florian

This is the fight that will more than likely determine the next challenger for BJ Penn’s championship, and it looks to be a great fight. With two fighters who have been on a roll lately, its time for one of them to finally get knocked off the high horse they rode in on. In my view, this is going to be heading to the ground quickly, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see either of these two throw leather at each other. With that being said, I know that Huerta is a good fighter with a solid fan base behind him, but if it does go to the crowd, Florian has the advantage in my mind. The same goes for standing. Florian just seems to be too well rounded of a fighter and as much as I like Roger Huerta, I don’t know if he is going to be able to pull out the victory here as Florian really is a strong Lightweight. With that being said…

Heavyweight Bout
Brock Lesnar vs.
Heath Herring

Here it is, one of my most anticipated fights of the night pits Brock Lesnar up against Heath Herring. For everyone who thinks Lesnar will walk through Herring, you are dead wrong. Sure Herring doesn’t have the key wins lately to provide him enough merit for a title shot, but you have to remember that this is the former PRIDE Heavyweight champion and the man who could have knocked out Antonio Noguiera had he jumped on the ball at the right time. In the same sense though, Lesnar can’t be classified as a push over by any means either. While he did lose to Frank Mir, he was in control for the entire fight until he made a rookie mistake and got caught. This one really could be a toss up, but I see Brock Lesnar shutting down all of the nay sayers by taking Herring to the ground and beating the holy hell out of him.

UFC Welterweight Championship
Georges St. Pierre (c) vs.
Jon Fitch

The main event, featuring Georges St. Pierre takes on Jon Fitch. To be honest, I have heard many people saying that Fitch is going to go in there and stand toe to toe with GSP, but in my mind, after St. Pierre lost to Matt Serra, he has been a whole new fighter. Never coming into a fight unprepared or caught off guard, GSP is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world currently and there isn’t any doubt in my mind. As much as Fitch may deserve a title shot, I really see no chance in hell of him walking out of Minnesota with the Welterweight championship around his waist. If you look at the quality wins section, it easily favors St. Pierre and there is no way that I see Fitch even lasting five rounds with the champion. This is going to be the fight that places GSP in the upper tier of greatest fighters of all time.
