A Geek-End Weekend August 2008.

This is an old Geek-end Weekend, only now being written about.  Myself, the one and only Kevin Hellions, was joined by Sweet Matty Treats, Krone Meltzer, and the Educator of Excellence to go see some WWE and UFC action.  Along the way we were joined by the Raptor and this version of Team Hellions went to Syracuse NY for a Smackdown/ECW house show.
First stop was the Carousel mall to see if we ran into any WWE Superstars out killing time before the show.  Last time we were in Syracuse for a show there was a wrestler near by every time you turned your head.  Kane was signing autographs at Best Buy.  Kristal Marshall, Jimmy Wang Yang and Paul London were shopping.  Team Hellions walked behind Kristal for the entire length of the mall.  And it was well worth it.  Mark Henry and Marcus Cor Von were walking the mall together, parting the crowd like Moses did the Red Sea.  I summoned up the courage to shake Mr. Cor Von’s hand and tell him what a huge fan I am.  Unfortunately I closed my hand too quickly and bent his fingers back for a very uncomfortable handshake.
But this time there were no wrestlers to talk to, nor any autograph signings.  I bought some comics, we all had a little bit to eat and were off to the show.
Well, half of the show at least.  Because after seeing talented wrestlers such as Evan Bourne, the Brian Kendrick, Shelton Benjamin and Jeff Hardy we were treated to a half hour classic… between Mike Knox and Finlay.  While both are talented wrestlers, this was not the match that anyone wanted to see.  Maybe for 5 minutes, but no longer than 6.  Much less 30.  The match didn’t seem to ever end.  No classic British catch as catch can wrestling from Finlay.  No brawling from Mike Knox.  No response from the crowd.  Which we led.  You see, for every match up until this one Team Hellions led the slow claps.  We rallied behind the faces and motivated them to make dramatic come backs.  But even our magical hands could not save Finlay.
The match was thankfully over and we were ready for… intermission!  …the fuck?  Really?  We had a UFC PPV to watch.  Brock Lesnar!  Realizing that this was a house show no one cared about, even the wrestlers were playing it safe and being, lets face it, boring, we left the show early to travel to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch some UFC.  We arrive at 930, the show starts at 10 and we see three free tables.  Things are looking up.  We’re number 5 on the list, but with 3 free tables this shouldn’t take long at all.  Many minutes go by and no one has been seated.  Finally we ask, why is no one sitting there?  “Oh, some wrestlers put down $500 per table to hold them so they can watch Brock Lesnar.”  We’re now confused.  Do we leave, realizing we’ll never get a seat and eat tonight.  Or do we stay, and see some wrestlers?  We stayed.  Standing for two hours for this moment.  “Mr. Dykstra, your table is over here.”  Sweet Matty Treats leads the way for Kenny Dykstra and Victoria!  More wrestlers follow.  The Hardys and MVP were shown to their table by us.  And then we stood.  What now?  Brock’s fight came on, he won, and we left.  For Denny’s.  Slow Joe was our waiter, forgetting things like spoons, forks, and our drinks.  He tried but the kid wasn’t right in the head.  Another waitress kept apologizing for him and offered to switch tables so she could wait on us.  Not a problem we said, because then we would have to leave a tip.  Dammit, tips are to be earned, not expected!  Slow Joe receives a few dollars and a half.  Litterally a half, as the Educator tore a dollar in two and left half of it there.
We leave for home, defeated men.  No great wrestling, no great food, no great UFC.  But we had the memories of another Geek-end Weekend.

Random Wrestling Reviews (RWR) – ECW September 23, 2008.

To refresh:

The Miz and John Morrison insult the new Superstar initiative.

Finlay beats Bam Neely.

Maryse pins Michelle McCool.

Mike Knox pins Chase Stevens.  After the match, Tommy Dreamer and Jack Swagger get involved.

The Miz vs. John Morrison ends in a no contest.  Ricky Ortiz runs out and hits a Big O on both men.

Opinions:

Jim Ross announced this episode, along with Matt Striker and this is exactly what Striker needs to get even better.  It’s been no secret that in my opinion, Striker is the best announcer in WWE.

Ricky Ortiz is over, and I have no idea why.  He’s goofy, he’s not that great a wrestler, he is apparently a ladies man, and I love every minute he’s on TV.  It’s the most ridiculous gimmick right now, and for some reason it works.

Why do Hornswoggle and Finlay run around the ring with small children?  ‘Swoggle is an adult, not a child.  He wants to go out, drink, find a woman, and have a good time.  Not be chased by kindergarten kids.

Maryse vs. Michelle McCool is the best rivalry going right now.  Every match these two women have, they improve.  Their chemistry is outstanding, and they even progress a storyline within their bouts.  Also, the hair flip DDT is one of the best finishing moves in years.  Sure its just a DDT, but the sexy flip adds so much personality to the move.

Did I hear Jim Ross say that Mike Knox will be ECW Champion in 2008?  I’ll give him 2009, but ’08 is almost over.  Knox has improved so much, and his new brawler style/look reminds me of Bruiser Brody and Steve Williams.  Knox could be the future, which is amazing when one things of his debut during which all he had was Kelly Kelly.

Miz and Morrison are future main eventers.  I’m talking WrestleMania level main events.  They are the best tag team in wrestling today, so good they should have an official tag team name with the word “Express” in it.  That’s right, as good as the Midnight Express or Rock and Roll Express.  Now if only they had someone as good to feud with, besides each other.

ECW results for July 15, 2008.

Highlights of Tony Atlas and Mark Henry from last week’s episode.

Tazz introduces Mark Henry and Tony Atlas.  Atlas puts over Henry and his strength.  To show how strong he is, Mark Henry bends frying pans with his hands.  Tommy Dreamer comes out, he wants to try to bend frying pans too.  Dreamer “tries” to bend the pan and then bashes it across Henry’s head.  The pan bends, Dreamer leaves the ring.

Teddy Long gives Tommy Dreamer the rest of the night off, because (to paraphrase) ECW is not Raw and he will not condone anarchy.

Mike Knox vs. Shannon Moore

Knox hits a sick looking Knox-out for the pin.

Chavo Guerrero (with Bam Neely) vs. Evan Bourne

Bourne does a pre-taped interview before the match: “I will defy the odds, because I defy gravity.”

Bourne hits moves I’ve never seen before and pins Chavo after a Shooting Star Press.

Tiffany and Colin Delaney talk backstage.  Tony Atlas and Mark Henry interrupt.  Mark Henry bear hugs Colin and tosses him onto some equipment.

The Miz and John Morrison (WWE tag champs) vs. the Hardys

Morrison hits the Moonlight Drive on Matt.  Morrison goes for the pin, but Jeff jumpts off the top rope and hits a Swanton bomb onto Morrison.  Matt Hardy rolls over and pins Morrison.

-end-

ECW results for June 24, 2008.

A video package is played of last night’s “stage collapse”.

ECW General Manager Theodore Long says that while Vince is in all their prayers, the show must go on.  He then introduces the newest member of ECW – Matt Hardy.

Matt Hardy and CM Punk vs. John Morrison and the Miz.

Move of the night was a double bulldog/high five move performed by Punk and Hardy on Miz and Morrison.

Hornswoggle, who has been hiding under the ring, distracts the Miz.  Hardy hits a Twist of Fate on Morrison for the pin.

Extreme Rules Match:  Kofi Kingston vs. Shelton Benjamin.

Kofi hits a Huracanrana on Shelton, throwing him into a trash can, then hits the Trouble in Paradise for the pin.

During the match it was announced that there will be a supplemental WWE draft on WWE.com tomorrow.

Mike Knox vs. Evan Bourne

Knox hits the Knox-out for the pin.

Big Show joins the announcers for this match.

Kane vs. Mark Henry

Kane falls off the top rope.  Henry picks him up and hits the World’s Strongest Slam for the pin.

ECW Spoilers for June 17, 2008.

ECW
Hornswoggle d. Armando Estrada with the Tadpole Splash. It was purely comedy. Hornswoggle ran away, pulling out a squirt gun and spraying him with water. When he realized that didn’t work, he ran with Armando chasing him. He pulled out a toy mallet and started hitting him with it. He lured him outside where Finlay was hiding underneath the ring with a huge Super Soaker and sprayed him. Finlay may have hit him after that because he rolled him into the ring knocked out so Hornswoggle could give him the Splash.

Layla danced for the crowd, only to stop as the crowd wasn’t giving her any love, even though she dances WAY better than Kelly Kelly. She said that might be the last time they see her dance, and she hopes she gets traded to a brand where the fans could appreciate her.

Evan Bourne d. Matt Striker with the SSP (I’m surprised they brought back the Shooting Star, but it was nice to see it again.) After the Evan Bourne/Matt Striker match, Mike Knox ambushed Bourne and attacked him for “last week” (the night before???)

Kofi Kingston d. Mike Knox via DQ. Shelton was on the offense until he went for his patented screw kick, in which Kofi dodged and hit Mike Knox, who was coming from behind to help out. Knox and Benjamin argued as Kofi went up the ramp.

Like Nando said, Teddy Long gives Finlay and Hornswoggle the Tag Team title fight with Miz and Morrison at Night of the Champions with Finlay nailing him with the shillelagh after Miz asked if Long was serious about giving them the title shot.

CM Punk d. John Morrison with the GTS. As Punk was celebrating in the ring and Morrison was stumbling up the ramp, Miz comes by with an icepack over where Finlay hit him, and says Morrison is still one half of the Tag Team championship.

Teddy Long brings out Big Show and Kane for a “confrontation”. Big Show said they were rivals and tag team partners but at Night of the Champions, he’s going after he wants. Kane said Show knows him and that he’ll do whatever it takes to keep the title, in which Show said he’s a sick, sadistic freak. Mark Henry comes out and says he doesn’t care who’s the champ, after Night of the Champions, he’s going after the champ. After Show and Kane double chokeslam Henry, they continue to argue until the show ends, as both leave to applause.

WWE – ECW taping Results for 6/10.

from PWInsider:
Dark Match:   Jimmy Wang Yang and Shannon Moore def. Jason Styles and Brian Cage.

ECW Spoilers from 6/7/08 to air on 6/10/08 from Fresno, California
Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne def. Mike Knox and “The Gold Standard” Shelton Benjamin.  Evan Bourne with a missile dropkick to Mike Knox who was sitting in the middle of the ring.
Victoria def. Kelly Kelly – referee stoppage.  Victoria counters a move from Kelly and tossed her over the ropes onto the mat below.  The bump to floor was sick.
Teddy Long gives Armando his chance to earn his contract tonight.  He will face Finlay and that is next.
Finlay w/ Hornswoggle def. Armando Estrada.  Finlay with the Celtic Cross to Armando.   Teddy Long comes out and gives Armando a second chance.  His second chance will be Colin Delaney.
Colin Delaney def. Armando Estrada.  Delaney with a DDT on Estrada who was still fazed by the Celtic Cross.
Teddy then gives Estrada another chance.  This time it’s against Hornswoggle.
Hornswoggle def. Armando Estrada.  Hornswoggle hits the Tadpole splash on Estrada.   The Estrada dilemma wasn’t explained to the live crowd.   After the match Hornswoggle, Delaney and Finlay celebrate in the ring.  Delaney takes Hornswoggle’s hat and puts it on him, then onto Finlay.  Finlay gets annoyed, then he hits Delaney with the shillelagh.
Mark Henry cuts a promo on Big Show and calls him out.  (Huge “You Suck” chant) Big Show responds.  Henry congratulates Big Show in advance for beating Kane at Night of Champions.  This leads to Henry leaving the ring and the ECW Champion, Kane coming out to confront the Big Show on the ramp way.
Kane and partner vs. The WWE Tag Team Champions, The Miz and John Morrison is next.   The Miz and John Morrison def. Kane and CM Punk to retain The WWE Tag Team Championship. John Morrison with his finisher to Punk for the 1-2-3.
