A Geek-End Weekend August 2008.

This is an old Geek-end Weekend, only now being written about.  Myself, the one and only Kevin Hellions, was joined by Sweet Matty Treats, Krone Meltzer, and the Educator of Excellence to go see some WWE and UFC action.  Along the way we were joined by the Raptor and this version of Team Hellions went to Syracuse NY for a Smackdown/ECW house show.
First stop was the Carousel mall to see if we ran into any WWE Superstars out killing time before the show.  Last time we were in Syracuse for a show there was a wrestler near by every time you turned your head.  Kane was signing autographs at Best Buy.  Kristal Marshall, Jimmy Wang Yang and Paul London were shopping.  Team Hellions walked behind Kristal for the entire length of the mall.  And it was well worth it.  Mark Henry and Marcus Cor Von were walking the mall together, parting the crowd like Moses did the Red Sea.  I summoned up the courage to shake Mr. Cor Von’s hand and tell him what a huge fan I am.  Unfortunately I closed my hand too quickly and bent his fingers back for a very uncomfortable handshake.
But this time there were no wrestlers to talk to, nor any autograph signings.  I bought some comics, we all had a little bit to eat and were off to the show.
Well, half of the show at least.  Because after seeing talented wrestlers such as Evan Bourne, the Brian Kendrick, Shelton Benjamin and Jeff Hardy we were treated to a half hour classic… between Mike Knox and Finlay.  While both are talented wrestlers, this was not the match that anyone wanted to see.  Maybe for 5 minutes, but no longer than 6.  Much less 30.  The match didn’t seem to ever end.  No classic British catch as catch can wrestling from Finlay.  No brawling from Mike Knox.  No response from the crowd.  Which we led.  You see, for every match up until this one Team Hellions led the slow claps.  We rallied behind the faces and motivated them to make dramatic come backs.  But even our magical hands could not save Finlay.
The match was thankfully over and we were ready for… intermission!  …the fuck?  Really?  We had a UFC PPV to watch.  Brock Lesnar!  Realizing that this was a house show no one cared about, even the wrestlers were playing it safe and being, lets face it, boring, we left the show early to travel to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch some UFC.  We arrive at 930, the show starts at 10 and we see three free tables.  Things are looking up.  We’re number 5 on the list, but with 3 free tables this shouldn’t take long at all.  Many minutes go by and no one has been seated.  Finally we ask, why is no one sitting there?  “Oh, some wrestlers put down $500 per table to hold them so they can watch Brock Lesnar.”  We’re now confused.  Do we leave, realizing we’ll never get a seat and eat tonight.  Or do we stay, and see some wrestlers?  We stayed.  Standing for two hours for this moment.  “Mr. Dykstra, your table is over here.”  Sweet Matty Treats leads the way for Kenny Dykstra and Victoria!  More wrestlers follow.  The Hardys and MVP were shown to their table by us.  And then we stood.  What now?  Brock’s fight came on, he won, and we left.  For Denny’s.  Slow Joe was our waiter, forgetting things like spoons, forks, and our drinks.  He tried but the kid wasn’t right in the head.  Another waitress kept apologizing for him and offered to switch tables so she could wait on us.  Not a problem we said, because then we would have to leave a tip.  Dammit, tips are to be earned, not expected!  Slow Joe receives a few dollars and a half.  Litterally a half, as the Educator tore a dollar in two and left half of it there.
We leave for home, defeated men.  No great wrestling, no great food, no great UFC.  But we had the memories of another Geek-end Weekend.

Daily Wrestling #1

Vladimir Kozlov Entering The Arena

Image via Wikipedia

Daily Wrestling is where I will write about whatever wrestling I have watched that day.  It might be new, old, DVDs, VHS, downloads, US, Japan, Mexico, women, etc.  It could be one hour or a 24 hour marathon.  Each “issue” will be numbered for my benefit and yours.

Daily Wrestling #1:  WWE Friday Night Smackdown October 3, 2008 and October 10, 2008.

After two weeks of the new Smackdown on MyNetworkTV, I still find the opening to be awful.  Terrible music, and the Smackdown opening has never looked as cool as Raw’s.  Even the ECW opening is interesting.  Maybe it’s the blue color scheme.

Other than each man attacking the other, or hitting finishing moves at random, I’ve been given no reason to care about the Jeff Hardy/ Triple H/ Vladmir Kozlov feud.  Kozlov wants competition, great, but I’ve yet to see him do anything, besides these attacks, to earn a title shot.  A US title shot, maybe, but not a World title.  Also, if he is picked for Cyber Sunday, is this his first PPV appearance?  If so, his first PPV will be in a World title match, that he could possibly win just to shake up the “WWE Universe”.  This isn’t a huge name coming in from another federation, this is an unproven talent that is being forced at the fans.  With a headbutt for a finishing move.  A headbutt.  Even the Samoans don’t use a headbutt as a finisher, and they’re known for having indestructible heads.  I hope in Triple H’s quest to be the greatest ever that he goes over in this match as, “the only man to beat two foes in a Cyber Sunday match”.

Yes, the Big Show has a strong fist.  That and he is also tall, bald, and has a liking for tigers of various colors.  Can we move on with the show now?

Never in my life did I think I would see Mark Henry and The Great Khali making “quick” tags, much less with each other as partners.  Poor Chavo.  Then, in a storyline progression, he’s at Vickie’s side the next week!  Is anyone booked as a weaker human being than Chavo Guerrero?

To R-Truth.  I don’t care to know “what’s up?”  I want you to get to the ring, wrestle an entertaining match, and show the world that you can hang with the likes of Shelton Benjamin and MVP.  Two men that should be receiving your push, as they are great WWE Superstars.  That being said, these three men should either team up or go off into different feuds instead of being the “black portion” of Smackdown.

I’ll write this a lot, but the future of WWE is here now.  Team Priceless vs. the Colons and CM Punk was just one view of it.  Should these kids ever get together backstage it would be a revolution not seen in wrestling since the Kliq.  This could be for good, exciting main events, ladder matches, leading into the Attitude era; or for bad — nWo, quad tears, the end of kayfabe, no wait its back, but there it goes again.

Throughout the October 3 episode the Raw champions looked stronger.  Santino won, Beth won, and CM Punk made the pin for his team (not a Raw champion, but a Raw brand wrestler).  Until the great Triple H comes out with the only pin for the Smackdown side.  Now I understand that with the new network there was a desire to make Smackdown the number one show.  Triple H and Jim Ross were brought over to achieve this goal.  But is making HHH the only force on the roster the best way to go about it?  He’s destroying everyone in his path, and making them look weak.  The Smackdown main event for WrestleMania will have to involve a Raw star switching brands, because by then there will be no legitimate challengers left on Smackdown that the great H has not already defeated.

Kung Fu Naki?  Seriously?

What exactly is an “incentive bonus” for MVP?  At this point I hope its a move to Raw.

Kizarny.  I can’t wait.  This could be a cool crazy gimmick up there with Waylon Mercy and Sean O’Haire.  Unfortunately, it’ll probably last just as long as those previous ones.

Kenny Dykstra and Ryan Braddock?  Guys, you have ECW right there.  Its a show to help these young talents improve and become main eventers.  It works too, look at the success you’ve had with Miz, John Morrison, and Evan Bourne.  Move these guys over there, please.

The Great Khali and Runjin Singh come out.  Talk about Johnny Knoxville and Jackass.  They show the Khali kiss cam from Raw.  Khali destroys three independent wrestlers.  Ok, he destroys one of them, the other two run out of the ring.  They bring in a woman from the audience to kiss Khali on the Khali Kiss Cam.  They find a rather large fan to come into the ring, she’s dressed like well, like a wrestling fan.  Khali kisses her in his best acting since The Longest Yard.

I can see the glass ceiling, and the ladder to reach it, from here for Smackdown.  Triple H at the top.  Undertaker (now looking weak) and Big Show (bossed around by a woman) right below.  Jeff Hardy below that, with a foot on his fingers, trying to kick him down a notch.  Shelton, MVP, and Truth — amazing talents all — are feuding over the Black US title.  Any young talents are given comedic gimmicks, so fans don’t take them too seriously, or no wins — thus no push.  But those saying, “there are no new stars” the gods of the WWE Universe will point to Vladmir Kozlov.  That’s the best you can give me?  A Cold War- era recycled gimmick with a wrestler not nearly as talented as past Russians.

Where is my current heel?  Someone from the Middle East?  From North Korea?  A rich billionaire who is buying up mortgages and forcing people out of their homes.  Get really controversial, have Finlay and Hornswoggle dress up as priests, yet still invite children into the ring with them.  Don’t do anything further than that, you won’t need to.  But a Russian?  Where is that a threat besides Atlanta?  (See, Atlanta is in the state of Georgia, while Russia is fighting with its neighboring country also named Georgia.  Also, WCW was based in Atlanta, thus giving me two jokes for the price of one.)

Of course, even if we had that heel, Triple H would squash him.

ECW Spoilers for June 17, 2008.

ECW
Hornswoggle d. Armando Estrada with the Tadpole Splash. It was purely comedy. Hornswoggle ran away, pulling out a squirt gun and spraying him with water. When he realized that didn’t work, he ran with Armando chasing him. He pulled out a toy mallet and started hitting him with it. He lured him outside where Finlay was hiding underneath the ring with a huge Super Soaker and sprayed him. Finlay may have hit him after that because he rolled him into the ring knocked out so Hornswoggle could give him the Splash.

Layla danced for the crowd, only to stop as the crowd wasn’t giving her any love, even though she dances WAY better than Kelly Kelly. She said that might be the last time they see her dance, and she hopes she gets traded to a brand where the fans could appreciate her.

Evan Bourne d. Matt Striker with the SSP (I’m surprised they brought back the Shooting Star, but it was nice to see it again.) After the Evan Bourne/Matt Striker match, Mike Knox ambushed Bourne and attacked him for “last week” (the night before???)

Kofi Kingston d. Mike Knox via DQ. Shelton was on the offense until he went for his patented screw kick, in which Kofi dodged and hit Mike Knox, who was coming from behind to help out. Knox and Benjamin argued as Kofi went up the ramp.

Like Nando said, Teddy Long gives Finlay and Hornswoggle the Tag Team title fight with Miz and Morrison at Night of the Champions with Finlay nailing him with the shillelagh after Miz asked if Long was serious about giving them the title shot.

CM Punk d. John Morrison with the GTS. As Punk was celebrating in the ring and Morrison was stumbling up the ramp, Miz comes by with an icepack over where Finlay hit him, and says Morrison is still one half of the Tag Team championship.

Teddy Long brings out Big Show and Kane for a “confrontation”. Big Show said they were rivals and tag team partners but at Night of the Champions, he’s going after he wants. Kane said Show knows him and that he’ll do whatever it takes to keep the title, in which Show said he’s a sick, sadistic freak. Mark Henry comes out and says he doesn’t care who’s the champ, after Night of the Champions, he’s going after the champ. After Show and Kane double chokeslam Henry, they continue to argue until the show ends, as both leave to applause.

WWE – ECW taping Results for 6/10.

from PWInsider:
Dark Match:   Jimmy Wang Yang and Shannon Moore def. Jason Styles and Brian Cage.

ECW Spoilers from 6/7/08 to air on 6/10/08 from Fresno, California
Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne def. Mike Knox and “The Gold Standard” Shelton Benjamin.  Evan Bourne with a missile dropkick to Mike Knox who was sitting in the middle of the ring.
Victoria def. Kelly Kelly – referee stoppage.  Victoria counters a move from Kelly and tossed her over the ropes onto the mat below.  The bump to floor was sick.
Teddy Long gives Armando his chance to earn his contract tonight.  He will face Finlay and that is next.
Finlay w/ Hornswoggle def. Armando Estrada.  Finlay with the Celtic Cross to Armando.   Teddy Long comes out and gives Armando a second chance.  His second chance will be Colin Delaney.
Colin Delaney def. Armando Estrada.  Delaney with a DDT on Estrada who was still fazed by the Celtic Cross.
Teddy then gives Estrada another chance.  This time it’s against Hornswoggle.
Hornswoggle def. Armando Estrada.  Hornswoggle hits the Tadpole splash on Estrada.   The Estrada dilemma wasn’t explained to the live crowd.   After the match Hornswoggle, Delaney and Finlay celebrate in the ring.  Delaney takes Hornswoggle’s hat and puts it on him, then onto Finlay.  Finlay gets annoyed, then he hits Delaney with the shillelagh.
Mark Henry cuts a promo on Big Show and calls him out.  (Huge “You Suck” chant) Big Show responds.  Henry congratulates Big Show in advance for beating Kane at Night of Champions.  This leads to Henry leaving the ring and the ECW Champion, Kane coming out to confront the Big Show on the ramp way.
Kane and partner vs. The WWE Tag Team Champions, The Miz and John Morrison is next.   The Miz and John Morrison def. Kane and CM Punk to retain The WWE Tag Team Championship. John Morrison with his finisher to Punk for the 1-2-3.

ECW on SciFi results for June 3, 2008.

from PWInsider.com:

ECW for June 3rd opened with security removing items from Armando Estrada’s office.  Armando asked what they were doing, and one of the men said they were told to do it by “the general manager”.  Armando said he was the general manager, then Theodore R. Long walked in and said “Not anymore, playa.  Holla, holla, holla.”  The ECW opening then aired.
Fatal Four Way with the winner to face ECW Champion Kane later tonight in a non-title match:  CM Punk vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. Chavo Guerrero vs. John Morrison.
Clips of the Singapore Cane match from One Night Stand was shown as Dreamer made his entrance.  This might have been done so we didn’t have to watch Dreamer walk out in his new (ugly) white and red pants.  Tazz and Mike Adamle talked about Big Show’s injury and whether he would be ready for his match with Kane at Night Of Champions.
Dreamer and Morrison paired off at the bell in one part of the ring while Punk and Chavo went at it in the other.  Morrison gave Dreamer a kick to the back, but missed a legdrop and Dreamer hit an arm drag and dropped an elbow.  Punk suplexed Chavo onto “Tommy Morrison” (that’s what Adamle said).  Punk went for a cover on Morrison, but Dreamer pulled him off.  Dreamer and Punk slugged it out while Chavo and Morrison brawled.  Punk ran over to Chavo and cradled him for a two count.  Morrison mounted Dreamer and pounded him.  Dreamer clotheslined Morrison to the floor, then hit a clothesline off the ring apron to the floor on him.  Chavo gave Dreamer a pescado.  Punk hit Chavo with a tope.
Punk tossed Chavo into the ring, but Morrison hit Punk from behind, then pulled out Chavo and dropped him face first on the apron.  Morrison tossed Punk into the ring, but Punk hit a jumping knee.  Morrison avoided a Punk bulldog and hit him with a springboard kick.  Morrison went for the cover on Punk, but Dreamer broke it up.  Dreamer and Morrison went into reversals, with Dreamer ending up applying the Texas Cloverleaf on Morrison.  Chavo broke it up and gave Dreamer the Three Amigos.  Chavo went to the top rope, but Morrison stopped him and set up for a superplex.  Punk jumped on the apron and knocked them down.  Morrison fell into the Tree of Woe, while Chavo got hung up in the ropes on the outside of the ring.  Dreamer gave Morrison a baseball slide kick.  Punk gave Dreamer a springboard clothesline.  Chavo pulled himself to the top rope and gave Dreamer a frog splash.  Punk grabbed Chavo and gave him the GTS and got the pin at the six minute mark.
Winner: CM Punk
Punk checked on Dreamer, then celebrated with his Money In The Bank briefcase.  The announcers noted that Punk had never wrestled Kane before.
Backstage, Theodore R. Long was showing the letter from the WWE Board Of Directors that made him the new ECW General Manager.  He said Armando couldn’t be an active member of the roster and General Manager at the same time.  Long also said he felt Armando was overpaid.  Armando asked Long to “work with him” and Long said he had a match for him tonight.  Armando asked who his opponent was, and Long said he had brought over Smackdown’s U.S. Champion, Matt Hardy, to face him tonight.
Kofi Kingston joined the announcers for the next match.
Shelton Benjamin vs. Matt Sydal.
The replayed Benjamin attacking Kofi last week during the introductions.  Benjamin gave Sydal a pumphandle slam at the start, then choked him against the ropes.  Sydal came back with a enzugiri, hurricanrana and a double flying knee to the chest form the top rope for a two count.  Benjamin kicked out and hit a flapjack, then brutalized Sydal, including a press slam into a gutbuster.  Benjamin flipped Sydal into the corner, then dragged him out and put him in an overhead wristlock.  Sydal fought up, but Benjamin hit him with a clothesline.  Benjamin tossed Sydal out of the ring, right in front of Kingston.  Benjamin came out of the ring and argued with Kofi.  Benjamin picked up Sydal for a powerbomb on the floor, then turned and threw him into Kofi instead.  Benjamin rolled into the ring as Sydal was counted out at the four minute mark.
Winner via countout: Shelton Benjamin.
Kofi got up and dove into the ring to attack Benjamin.  They brawled to the floor, and Adamle said that stupid “Yamakin’ me crazy” line.  Kofi went to whip Shelton into the steps, but Shelton reversed it and sent Kofi hard into the ringsteps.  Benjamin walked off while Kofi clutched at his shoulder.
United States Champion Matt Hardy vs. Armando Estrada.
Armando went for a kick at the bell, but Hardy caught it and gave Armando a clothesline.  They traded shots, with Hardy getting the better of it.  Matt slammed Estrada, then hit a second rope elbowdrop to the back of the head.  Matt hit the Twist Of Fate and got the pin in about a minute.
Winner: Matt Hardy.
Theodore R. Long came out on the stage, and said he was going to give Armando a chance to prove he was worth “all the money in his contract”.  Long introduced his opponent, Colin Delaney.
Colin Delaney vs. Armando Estrada.
Colin rolled up Estrada in La Magistral before the bell even rang.  It rang, and Armando kicked out at two.  Armando hit Delaney with a few shots, then went for a reverse suplex, but Colin floated over and rolled up Armando.  Armando’s feet hit the ropes, and Delaney grabbed the pants of Estrada, but the referee counted three anyway, ending this match even quicker than the last one.
Winner: Colin Delaney.
Matt Hardy got in the ring to raise the hand of Colin Delaney as Estrada rolled to the floor.
After the break, Armando was begging Theodore R. Long to not fire him.  Long noted that he lost two straight matches.  Armando said he would renegotiate his contract, but wanted to wait until the draft, saying he might go to Raw or Smackdown.  Long said he could remain as a wrestler in ECW, but he would not be under contract any longer.  Long said Armando had to earn his contract, just like Colin Delaney did.  Long left, but said he had one more word for Armando.  Armando turned, and Ron Simmons was standing there.  “Damn!”
A video package on today’s press conference and the million dollar giveaway was shown. Mike Adamle was shown filling out the registration form.  I think he entered a bunch of numbers for his address.
ECW Champion Kane vs. CM Punk (non-title).
Punk tried to grab Kane’s leg at the bell, but Kane shoved him away.  Punk grabbed a headlock, but Kane shoved him off and hit a shoulderblock.  Punk grabbed an armwringer, but Kane shoved Punk to the mat. Kane backed Punk into a corner, then worked him over with punches.   Punk came back with kicks and forearms, then clotheslined Kane over the top rope and to the floor.  Kane landed on his feet, and dragged out Punk.  Kane decked Punk with a right hand, then threw him back into the ring.  Kane rammed Punk into the turnbuckles and hit him with a forearm and an uppercut.  Kane choked Punk in the corner, then lifted him in a Hangman. Kane flipped Punk to the mat, but Punk got up and charged him with a knee to the gut.  Punk hit some knees to the head, but when he tried a jumping knee in the corner, Kane lifted him and dropped him across the top rope.  Kane gave Punk a big boot, knocking him to the floor as they went to break.
Back from the break, Kane had Punk in an abdominal stretch and was pounding him in the ribs.  Punk battled out and tried his own abdominal stretch, but Kane blocked it with a hiptoss.  Kane snap mared Punk and dropkicked him in the face for a one count.  Punk and Kane exchanged shots, then Kane began pounding Punk in the back.  Kane put Punk in a bodyscissors.  Punk struggled in the hold, then elbowed out.  Punk gave Kane some leg kicks, then Kane reversed a whip and went for a backdrop.  Punk dove over Kane into a sunset flip for a two count.  Punk hit some punches, but Kane decked him with an uppercut.  Kane went for a slam, but Punk floated over and pushed Kane into a corner.  Kane charged back with a clothesline for a two count, then put Punk back in a bodyscissors with an armlock.
Punk tried to fight out of the hold again, but Kane held him down, then released the hold and drove one leg across Punk’s face.  Punk came back with some kicks and punches, but Kane delivered one boot to the face and Punk went down hard. Kane missed a charge in the corner and Punk hit three consecutive jumping knees in the corner.  Punk went for the bulldog, but Kane lifted Punk and hit a back suplex for a two count.  Kane whipped Punk in a corner and charged, but Punk hit a boot to the face.  Punk hit a second rope bulldog for a two count.  Punk went for a whip, but Kane blocked it and hit a side slam.  Kane went to the top rope and hit a clothesline for a two count.  Kane called for a chokeslam.  Kane grabbed Punk, but Punk kicked him in the head to get him to release his grip.  Kane threw Punk over the top rope, but Punk held on and landed on the apron.  Punk went for a springboard clothesline, but Kane grabbed him by the throat.  Kane went for the chokeslam, but Punk reversed out and went to lift Kane for the GTS.  However, Punk’s back gave out on him, and he dropped Kane to his feet. Kane grabbed Punk and hit the chokeslam for the clean pin at the fourteen minute mark.
Winner: Kane.
John Morrison and the Miz ran out and attacked Kane.  Punk was kicked to the floor, and wasn’t seen again.  Kane tried to fight back, but Morrison gave Kane a running knee to the head.  Miz then gave Kane the Reality Check neckbreaker.  Miz and Morrison stood over Kane.  They showed some replays, and when they came back, Miz and Morrison were in the aisle staring back at Kane, who was lying on the mat, staring and Miz & Morrison, while smiling. That ended the show.
